Philander Smith Students
Turn "Fiscal" into "Physical"
On March 19, 2009, the National Academy of Public Administration teamed up with Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, to play an exhibition tournament of Budgetball. Budgetball is a brand new sport designed to let players learn about debt management, spending strategies, and fiscal policies -- all in the midst of a high-intensity physical game.
More than 80 students played in a half-day tournament, supported by a dozen student volunteers and cheered on by more than 100 spectators - a level of interest and participation that Philander Smith President Walter Kimbrough deemed "phenomenal." With donations of food, beverages and prizes from local vendors, the participants and spectators enjoyed a fast-paced day of Budgetball games, interspersed with "fiscal quizzes" and learning opportunities.
"If 'extreme accounting' were a sport, it would be Budgetball."
Jennifer L. Dorn, President, National Academy of Public Administration
Thanks to the generous support of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the winning Philander Smith College team will join other students from around the country at the Youth Entitlements Summit in Washington DC, where they will participate in the Summit and play Budgetball against the winning team of the University of Miami Budgetball tournament being held on April 18, 2009.

"We are thrilled to be among the first colleges to host a Budgetball tournament for our students. These issues are critical to their future, and we want to do all that we can to get young people engaged in finding solutions."
